Bedding products can be toxic to our health!

Most conventional pillows on the market today are filled with toxic chemicals including; 1).polystyrene (styrofoam): a petroleum-based chemical (also used in home insulation) 2). polyurethane foam: also a petroleum-based chemical, and more commonly known as poly-fill 3). polyethylene terephthalate (PET): which is also used to make plastic drinking bottles. These plastics products are made by combining highly toxic chemicals together to form the final materials. Flame retardant chemicals are also added to bedding products. The latest research shows that petroleum chemicals used to make these materials are being slowly emitted into the breathing zone of individuals while they are sleeping and resting. The ill effects of these chemicals are being studied and published. Chem-Tox.com, researches and publishes the effects of chemicals and pesticides upon health, utilizing data from The Department of Florida's University Medical Libraries. Chem-Tox states "that petroleum based chemicals being used in bedding and many other household products today are causing significant detrimental effects to the nervous system and immune systems after prolonged exposure". Illnesses identified in the medical research include cancer, asthma, numerous neurological disorders (ADD, autism and mental retardation) allergies and infertility, the list goes on. According to the journal-Archives of Environmental Health published Jan/Feb.-2000; "Over the past 50 years there has been a steady rise in the incidence of children developing cancer and asthma". During this same 50 year period consumer product manufacturers have cut production costs significantly by replacing natural materials with petroleum based alternatives made from synthetic chemicals". The bedding industry has been affected by this switch in materials, making it now the norm, to use these toxic chemicals. Studies also show significant health problems in workers and their children, who are producing and manufacturing these products. Unfortunately, consumers aren't openly told this information because it is not widely publicized. In addition to these startling facts, the materials made to fill commercial pillows on the market today are not biodegradable. Meaning that in 100 years they will still be present in the environment. Yes, some of these fillings are made from recycled plastics but they themselves are not going to break down over time, adding to pollution and environmental concerns.
